Fire Safety

Each year in the U.S., 70-80,000 workplaces experience a serious fire. About 200 employees per year die in these fires and another 5000 are injured. Property losses from workplace fires exceed $2 billion annually. About 15% of workplace fires result from a catastrophic failure of equipment and approximately 85% are caused by factors related to human behavior. This means that by being proactive, with a simple fire prevention plan and program, you can greatly reduce the likelihood of a fire in your workplace.

In 29 CFR 1910 Subpart L, OSHA states regulations for the area of fire safety. This regulation covers the requirements of employer fire brigades, portable fire extinguishers, various fixed fire suppression equipment, fire detection systems, and employee alarm systems. In 29 CFR 1910.38-39, OSHA lays out the rules for Emergency Action Plans and Fire Prevention Plans. It is important for employers to understand the regulations presented in these standards and how they are related to Subpart L.

Employees in all areas need to be properly trained to deal with the potential of fires.
